Laguna Explorers @ Home:
2 Weeks of Virtual Fun, Learning, and Creativity!"

Laguna Explorers @ Home is an environmental engagement program for 6-11 year olds, full of fun learning experiences that can be done at, around, and nearby home.

After months of planning and preparation, we are proud to say that Laguna Explorers @ Home, our new virtual summer program for kids, was a heartwarming and positive success. Explorers and their families started their weeks on Monday with picking up a backpack full of supplies for arts, crafts, and exploration. From there, they attended three Zoom sessions per day with Laguna Naturalist staff, each one full of games, sharing stories, and learning that supported each child's social-emotional development.

Who knew you could have so much fun on Zoom?! In between sessions, the young naturalists would watch fun instructional videos created by our staff and complete activities using their backpack supplies. They wrote in nature journals, set track boxes, wove with tule, sang songs, and much, much more. Most importantly, they experienced the joy of community, creativity, and nature all from home.

Each time an Explorer brought a completed starry eye, pressed flower bookmark, or other activity to a Zoom session to share with us, we would marvel at what can be accomplished with hard work, a little creativity, and supportive technology, both for us as educators and for our young Explorers. Thanks to this innovative work by our education staff, 25 Laguna Explorer junior naturalists across the North and East Bay are now equipped to ask questions, make observations, and connect more deeply to the natural world.

“I'm telling everyone about what a great virtual experience this was! I think that schools who have to provide distance education could use what you've done as a template.”
