The Heron Hall Art Gallery exhibits three shows per year of local, nature-themed art. Sales support the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation and its mission to restore and conserve this Wetland of International Importance. Due to the multiple uses of Heron Hall, the gallery is available to view by appointment only, Monday - Friday, or during special events. Please contact Maggie Hart to schedule a visit.

Exhibit Overview

Illuminating Connections is a series of watercolor and ink illustrations that highlight the connections between organisms in their ecosystems, with a special focus on threatened or endangered species in California. All organisms exist in relation to each other – a kaleidoscope of connections across species, habitat, and time. When we recognize the interconnected needs of all species – including our own – we can make decisions that benefit us all.

About the Artist

Megan Gnekow's focus as an artist is to honor the beauty and wildness of our world through work that is both scientifically accurate and visually compelling. She strives to tell stories in a way that draws viewers in and piques curiosity about organisms and the environmental connections that support them. Megan's goal is to celebrate these connections and honor the role they play in sustaining the ecosystems where we live. Exhibit Overview

Spirit of My Homeland is a literary art exhibit and capsule retrospective celebrating the life and work of Gloria Armstrong. The exhibition features a selection of her paintings and drawings spanning several decades, along with her poetry and prose, and photographs by her friend and renowned photographer Hansel Mieth. Through her work, Gloria reflects on the brilliance, kinship, and healing found in the natural world—a powerful and enduring source of inspiration—and offers a living testimony of a local life beautifully rooted in survivance. Developed in collaboration with her daughters, Yana and Lorelle Ross, this exhibition presents Gloria's work for its cultural, historical, and artistic significance. The artworks in this exhibition are not available for purchase.

About the Artist

Gloria Armstrong is a self-taught artist and poet of Pomo, Mishewal Wappo, and Coast Miwok descent and a tribal citizen of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. A lifelong artist, she emerged as one of the first contemporary California Indian artists in the 1960s—at a time when Native representation in the arts was almost nonexistent. Her unique freehand designs are deeply inspired by the beauty and sacredness of nature, creating imaginative, biomorphic forms that express her reverence and spiritual connection to the land. Gloria's work is included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Sonoma County, and this exhibition includes several works on loan from the museum alongside pieces representing the vivid range of her artistic career.
